My Story

For most of my childhood I always thought I was a shy person; I did not like going to new places, make new friends, or raise my hands in class. As I grew up and eventually left the nest, I started to develop my own personality; I finally realized that I am more outgoing than I originally thought. Like most children I wanted to be done with school as soon as possible and be able to live my life; that was before I knew what psychology had to offer.
I went from getting my Bachelor degree in Psychology to my Master degree in Forensic Psychology, and here I am now finishing up my final year in my Master degree in Counseling Psychology to become a Marriage and Family Therapist. I gained experience not only in school, but through different jobs that I have been fortunate enough to be a part of; I opened my eyes to various situations that shaped who I am today, and the therapist that I would like to become.
I worked with women suffering from eating disorders where I saw how trauma can effect a person’s mindset and lead them down an unhealthy path; I worked with children diagnosed with Autism and learned how they can reach their goals with consistent love and support from others around them, with that I also saw how families struggle with life changing situation of having to care for a special need individual; I also worked with at-risk youth in group homes where they were perceived and treated differently because society has a preconceived idea that all group home youth are troubled and dangerous.
With all of these experiences combined, I discovered a need in our school system; a need in educating teens that there is help for them if they feel that they are in an unhealthy relationship. In order to prevent domestic violence, we first have to break the cycle of violence; what better way to do that than by educating adolescence on the signs of an abusive relationship and allowing them to reach out for help now?
When I first came up with the idea to start The E.V.E.R Project I thought I would have to do this alone – trying to get schools to take me in, reaching out to other organizations for their guidance – then I found Counseling Partners of LA through my practicum program at school. Now, I not only have the pleasure of starting out my internship as a high school counselor, I also have a wonderful agency helping me finalize The E.V.E.R Project and putting it out in schools. Goals are not impossible to achieve, life just gets in the way; the drive, determination, and vision we have within ourselves for ourselves is what helps us overcome those struggles in life.
